<p>This study expands the concept of orthogonality to orthogonal polynomials with respect to a <i>q</i>-difference operator. We investigate the existence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a <i>q</i>-difference operator, and provide three different sufficient conditions for their uniqueness. We additionally present several applications.</p>
