Development of the injector for the RAON heavy-ion accelerator

The RAON (Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON-line experiments) is a versatile multi-purpose accelerator facility designed to deliver beams of exotic rare isotopes across a range of energies. Capable of accommodating ions from protons to uranium, the RAON can accelerate protons up to 600 MeV and uranium ions up to 200 MeV/u. The facility’ s capability extends to providing diverse rare isotope beams generated by the RAON ISOL (isotope separator on-line) system. This paper highlights the successful commissioning of the RAON injector system, focusing on the examination of beam parameters from key technical systems, including the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source and radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ). The study also aims to determine optimized conditions for the low-energy beam transport (LEBT) and the medium-energy beam transport (MEBT), as well as the radio frequency set-point and matching. The details of development and the commissioning results for significant devices within the RAON injector system are presented herein. The findings contribute to the understanding and the optimization of beam dynamics, laying the foundation for the facility’ s operational readiness in delivering a diverse array of rare isotope beams for scientific investigations.
