Indepth Mineralogical and Geochemical Characterisation of Lean Grade Placer Deposit for Assessing the Potential for Mining Operations of Industrial Critical Minerals

On one hand, the demand for industrial placer heavy minerals is increasing, and on the other hand, the depletion of high-grade placer heavy mineral concentrates forces the exploitation of new deposits either lean or off-grade deposits. In this paper, an attempt is made to study the new deposit which is very lean. Given this, the present paper deals with the textural, mineralogical, and geochemistry of beach sand placer heavy minerals along the Bramhagiri coast, Odisha, India. Mineralogical study confirms that the shore consists of placer heavy minerals of economic importance such as ilmenite, garnet, and sillimanite as major minerals, and rutile, zircon, and monazite are in minor assemblage. The textural characters reveal that all heavy minerals are finer than gangue mineral quartz and the heavy minerals are not in uniform size. Monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite are finer in size than garnet minerals followed by sillimanite. Geochemical study of individual heavy minerals reveals that ilmenite and monazite minerals are weathered. It is found that the back dune sand is predominately mineral rich with all minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, garnet, sillimanite, zircon, and monazite, which are varying from 15 to 35% o and hence it has an economic importance for mining. Thus, Bramhagiri back dune sand deposit is recommended for mining.
