Effect of Ageing on Erosion Behavior of Epoxy Filled with Alumina Nano Filler

摘要

This paper investigates the effect of ageing on the erosion behaviour of epoxy composite having low weight fraction of alumina (Al2O3) nano filler. Two types of Al2O3 filler with different aspect ratio are used in the study viz. one with aspect ratio 1.0 i.e. particulate and second with higher aspect ratio 5–10, was named as cylindrical. The fabricated composite with filler content of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt% of each type of filler is left in open environment for three years for ageing. Aged specimen was cut in specific size and tested on air jet erosion test setup. During test the impingent angle is varied as 30°, 60°, and 90°. During testing the erodent flow rate and erosion time taken are 3 gm/min and 300 s respectively. The erosion rate is minimum in case of 30° impingent angle and maximum for 60° impingent angle. Erosion rate will also decrease by increasing the weight fraction content of both types of Al2O3 filler. The maximum decrease in erosion rate is about 89% in case of 1.5 wt% of cylindrical Al2O3 filler content composite when erodent impingent at 30° angle. Micro cracking, crators formation and etc. are the major reasons for increase in erosion rate.
