Comparative Analysis of MPEG-DASH and HLS Protocols: Performance, Adaptation, and Future Directions in Adaptive Streaming

Transmitting high quality media content over the network with diverse conditions using the adaptive streaming protocols has gained importance. Therefore, this paper compares the performance and adaptability of two of the widely used protocols namely MPEG-DASH and HLS. Experimentation is done using FFmpeg for encoding/compression, Digital Ocean for hosting, and using the performance metric by Apache J Meter. A study matrix involved observing response time, the number of operations completed per unit of time, the buffering frequency, and the total number of errors. Findings show that MPEG-DASH has less frequent and less erroneous restarts; therefore, it fits for inconsistent networks. On the other hand, HLS was much faster in its response and is recommended for stable and high-based applications, especially on Apple devices. This research opens up further possibilities for improvement in the model in the future to increase its performance with new and efficient adaptation algorithms, 5G, or further a new generation of the network, and edge computing. These possibly may lead forward to security, Realtime analytics, efficiency, incorporation of personalization, even latency during live streams, and a general concurrent user capacity scaling up.
