Evaluation of Growth Patterns and Urban Sprawl in Hazaribagh, India in between 2005 to 2025 Through Landscape Metrics

The process of urbanization in Hazaribagh city, a prominent city in the Jharkhand State of India, has experienced significant growth in the recent decade. Studying changes in urban sprawl provides valuable insights into landscape dynamics and their effects on local land resources. This study attempts to analyse the spatiotemporal dynamics and growth pattern of urban sprawl in Hazaribagh city within the last 20 years (2005 to 2025). Landsat datasets of thematic mapper and enhanced thematic mapper having OLI sensor were utilized for the analysis at an interval of 5 years (2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025). Land cover of the study area was classified using the supervised maximum likelihood method and the classification accuracy was assessed using the kappa coefficients. Based on the classified maps, the urban sprawl was measured using urban expansion intensity index (UEII), Shannon’s entropy index (SEI), and landscape metrics. Results showed that the urban sprawl in Hazaribagh city has increased over the period (2005 to 2025). The UEII value of 9.645 and SEI value range from 0.95 to 1.17 showed significant growth in urbanization. The spatial metrics that were analysed include Patch Density (21.64 to 44.77), Edge Density (129.98 to 153.16), Largest Patch Index (26.90 to 48.54), Landscape Shape Index (23.88 to 26.72), and Shape Metrics (0.66 to 0.75). These landscape metrics and spatiotemporal analyses indicate that urban sprawl expansion is increasing at a very high rate, mainly from the center of the city, where dense urban areas are also developing with the increase in population.
