Abstract <p>India’s growing demand for furniture is driving the plywood market, which relies on both domestic and imported wood. The plywood market in India is anticipated to grow to INR 297.2 billion by 2027–28, with a 7.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). This dramatic increase is primarily driven by the country’s rapid urbanization, changing lifestyle trends, and the growing demand for furniture in the residential sector. Plywood, a versatile construction material, is produced through a multi-step process that involves veneer preparation, adhesive application, drying, pressing, and finishing. The plywood industry contributes significantly to the Indian economy, providing job opportunities and contributing to infrastructure development and housing projects. Despite its economic importance, the plywood industry has significant environmental and socio-economic impacts. Environmental concerns include GHG emissions, energy usage, air &amp; water pollution, and chemical exposure risks. Occupational health and safety concerns in the industry result from inadequate safeguards and limited use of personal protective equipment. Plywood manufacturing units in local communities face air, water, noise, and food chain pollution due to burning wood trimmings for energy, posing health risks to workers and residents. The industry plays a crucial role in the country’s economy and infrastructure development but must address environmental, health, and safety concerns while fostering innovation for a sustainable and responsible future. Ongoing research and development efforts are focused on alternative adhesives, more efficient manufacturing processes, and recycling wood waste.</p> <p><i>Implications</i> This study emphasises how important it is for the plywood sector to balance social and environmental concerns with economic expansion. The results emphasise the necessity of strict laws and environmentally friendly practices to lessen the industry’s environmental impact and protect the health of local residents and employees. The review also makes the case that continued research is essential to advancing breakthroughs in environmentally friendly adhesives, efficient manufacturing, and the recycling of wood waste for a future that is more sustainable and responsible.</p> Graphical Abstract <p></p>
