Quantification of Seismic Resilience of a Hospital Building in High Seismic Prone Region of India

Healthcare facilities can be classified as critical infrastructures that are needed to provide immediate medical services after major disasters such as earthquakes. The seismic resilience of a hospital building can be quantified with reference to post-earthquake recovery time. Studies in the literature have reported that the seismic resilience of the overall system is dependent on both structural member damage and non-structural component (NSC) damage to the building due to a considered earthquake hazard level. The evaluation of the seismic resilience of a building primarily involves the selection of suitable metrics for measuring the quality of infrastructure, modeling the losses due to damage and the time required to restore to the pre-disaster performance level. The current study explores this concept and reviews the procedures in existing research to estimate the seismic resilience of hospitals. Furthermore, a simplified methodology for estimating the seismic resilience of an existing hospital building is demonstrated through seismic fragility analysis.
