In Vitro Bioactivity and Antimicrobial Efficacy of Modified Solvents Evaporation Assisted R. ellipticus

In the present study, the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of leaf, fruit, and root extracts of Rubus ellipticus were studied. The antioxidant activity (In vitro) of fruit methanol extract, ethanol leaf extract, and root methanol extract of R. ellipticus was significantly high. All tested microorganisms were found to be significantly (< 0.05) susceptible to ethanol, methanol, chloroform, and petroleum ether extracts of R. ellipticus leaves, fruit, and roots. The zone of inhibition shown by methanol extract of leaves for Staphylococcus aureus (12.0 ± 1 mm), Salmonella enterica (9.0 ± 1 mm), E. coli O157 (11.0 ± 1 mm), Candida albicans (0.8 ± .10 mm), and by ethanol extract of fruit against E. coli O157 (10.0 ± 1 mm) and C. albicans (0.6 ± 0.10 mm) were statistically significantly, whereas chloroform extract of roots and chloroform extract of fruits showed significant inhibition zones of 7 ± 1 mm and 6 ± 1 mm zones against S. aureus, and ethanol extract of leaves significantly inhibited Trichophyton rubrum by 13.0 ± 1 mm zone, respectively. ATR functional group analysis revealed the highest availability of alkynes and alkanes in the root, fruit, and leaves, whereas HPLC analysis revealed significantly higher gallic acid levels of 6.57 mg, 22.65 mg, and 20.88 mg in the leaves, fruit, and roots of Raspberry, as compared to rutin, which was 9.25 mg, 7.85 mg, and 2.0 mg in the leaves, fruit, and roots of Raspberry, respectively. The time-kill assay revealed that S. aureus was significantly more susceptible to R. ellipticus extracts of leaves, fruits, and roots than E. coli O157, S. enterica, C. albicans and T.rubrum. Thus, it was concluded that the raspberry is an important source of phyto-chemicals having antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
