<p>Northeast India is a hub to several endemic freshwater fish species, yet studies on cytogenetic characterization of most of these fishes remain inadequate. In the present study, three cyprinid fishes, <i>Garra annandalai</i>, <i>Garra gotyla</i> and <i>Pethia shalynius</i>, were collected from streams associated to the Brahmaputra drainage in northeast India. The diploid chromosomal count was obtained as 50, 50 and 52, with a karyotype formula of 14&#xa0;m + 12sm + 12st + 12t, 12&#xa0;m + 8sm + 8st + 22t and 12&#xa0;m + 22sm + 6st + 12t, and fundamental number 76, 70 and 86, respectively, of <i>G. annandalei, G. gotyla</i> and<i> P. shalynius.</i> Cytogenetic profiling of <i>G. annandalai</i> and <i>P. shalynius</i> is a first report in the present study, which will additionally supplement toward correct identification, study genetic inheritance and genome organization of these species.</p>
