Evaluation of the Anti-diabetic, Anti-obesity, Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic and Antipyretic Activities of Herba passiflora

The pharmacological studies of Herba Passiflorae are very rare. Herba Passiflorae is the dried aerial parts of Passiflora incarnate L. plant (Passifloraceae family). This study aims to evaluate the anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities of Herba passiflora. A single intraperitoneal injection was applied with streptozotocin (150 mg/kg) in rats to develop diabetes. Animals allow feed a high cholesterol diet for the induction of obesity for two months in rats. Injection with 0.1 ml of 1% carrageenin solution in saline in the right hind paw’s subplanter area to induced inflammation in rats. A hot plate test was used to test the analgesic activity in mice. An intramuscular injection of Brewer’s yeast suspension to induce pyretic in rats and the rectal temperature was measured. The results obtained revealed that Herba passiflora oral administration decreased the fasting serum glucose in diabetic rats. Herba passiflora oral administration decreased the serum total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins, and triglycerides in obese rats. Moreover, Herba passiflora inhibited the rat paw edema. Herba passiflora increased the animal reaction time which means analgesic activity in mice. Herba passiflora decreased the animal body temperature which refers to antipyretic activity. Herba passiflora oral administration at 90 mg/kg and 180 mg/kg improved all the above mentioned parameters where the higher dose was more effective than the lower dose did but both doses had lower effective than the standard drugs used. In conclusion, Herba passiflora had the anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities and these activities were dose dependent.
