Flavonoids, Phenolics and Antioxidant Evaluation of Different Parts of Three Wild Pyrus Species from Turkey

Pyrus amygdaliformis, Pyrus anatolica, and Pyrus elaeagnifolia are types of pear trees considered to be wild, native, and endemic species in Turkey. The total contents of flavonoids and phenolics and the antioxidant activities of the leaves, branches, and immature fruits of the three species were estimated and compared in this study. The highest values for total flavonoids and phenolics contents were obtained from P. anatolica branch extract (20.903 ± 0.025 and 47.020 ± 1.652 mg GAE/g, respectively). P. amygdaliformis branch extract exhibited the highest inhibition of DPPH radicals (94.72%), while P. elaeagnifolia fruit extract exhibited the lowest inhibition (53.62%). The current work evaluated the total content of flavonoids and phenols in addition to assessing the antioxidant activities of different parts of three native wild pear trees in Turkey. In addition, until now, this was the first study to evaluate the important phytochemical and antioxidant properties of P. amygdaliformis.
