Review on Landfill Leachate Treatment: Focus on the Applicability of Adsorbents
摘要
The objective of this article is to analyze the alarming issue of pollution caused by landfill leachate and to focus the use of novel adsorbent for amelioration of landfill leachate. For this study, the researcher have undergone the process to review more than hundred research papers/literature in the area of landfill leachate characterization, its environmental impacts and different treatment strategies for its remediation with special emphasis on novel adsorbents. In this review paper, the characterization of municipal landfill leachate and its resulting environmental impacts on human health and ecological system have been discussed in order to emphasize on the remediation strategies for the treatment of landfill leachate. Various mitigation methods have been significantly used to address the problems caused by an ever-increasing volume of landfill leachate; out of these, the adsorption is one of the most effective, easy and economical methods to use. In the present study, leachate characterization, its environmental impact, and different types of adsorbents such as activated carbon, biochar, nanoparticles and magnetically modified adsorbents used to remove various pollutants are discussed together with their challenges and future prospective. Conclusively, the intensifying of the adsorption technique represents a potentially feasible and powerful tool, leading to the better-quality improvement of ecological management. The study suggests potential for future research, indicating that adopting innovative environmentally friendlyadsorbents for treating landfill leachate could lead to sustainable and eco-conscious water resourcee management practices.
