Controlled Aquaculture of Perinereis nuntia as a Sustainable Live Feed for Shrimps: Yield, PUFA Profile, and Economic Feasibility
摘要
Perinereis nuntia is a valuable live feed in aquaculture, particularly for shrimp broodstock, due to its high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content. This study presents a controlled culture protocol for P. nuntia integrating habitat simulation, water treatment, and biosecure spawning-rearing systems. Over a 90 – 120-day cycle, cultured worms yielded 1.2 – 1.5 kg/m2, with a production cost of Rs. 985/ kg. GC–MS profiling revealed 40.17% total PUFA, including 8.52% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), 8.35% arachidonic acid (AA), and 7.41% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These results underscore the potential of lab-reared P. nuntia as a nutritionally superior, cost-effective alternative to wild harvesting for hatcheries, contributing to sustainable aquaculture and reduced pressure on natural stocks.
