Documenting First Record of Abnormal Otoliths in Selected Fishes of the Ganga Basin, India
摘要
Traditionally, fish otoliths have been examined by numerous researchers for age and growth estimation, otolith allometry, fossil records, species identification, population dynamics, trace elements and environmental reconstruction. Still, none have found any abnormalities in India. This is the first attempt to document the presence of abnormal otoliths (one in a pair) in Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822) and Trichogaster bejeus (Hamilton, 1822) from the Ganga Basin, India. The type 1 abnormality was found in both species, in which asteriscus was found attached to the sagittal otolith. The characteristics of the abnormal otoliths, and probable causes concerning environmental and ecological stressors in the Ganga Basin are discussed in this manuscript.
