摘要

The present study reports the first record of occurence of Olive flathead-gudgeon, Butis humeralis Valenciennes, 1837 (Gobiiformes: Butidae), from the North-western Arabian Sea based on two larval specimens and a juvenile. This is important because the adult specimen of this species has not been reported from the Northwest coast of India so far. The morphological and meristic characteristics of B. humeralis are detailed and compared with previously published records. In addition to the morphological assessment, the species identity was confirmed using molecular analysis based on the partial sequence of the mitochondrial Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene, which has been submitted to the NCBI database. This study provides the first confirmed report of B. humeralis in the Karanja estuary, Maharashtra, expanding the known geographical range of the species along the western Indian coast.
