Fishing Hook Ingestion in Caranx melampygus: An Alarming Indicator of Ghost Gear Impacts on Marine Ecosystems
摘要
A 4.5 cm J-shaped fishing hook was discovered embedded in the stomach of a Bluefin Trevally (Caranx melampygus) collected from Juglighat, South Andaman, causing localized inflammation and scar formation. This highlights the ecological threat of ghost fishing gear abandoned, lost or discarded fishing equipment (ALDFG) which continues to harm marine life, especially predatory fishes. Additionally, ingestion of metallic debris poses toxicological risks to marine biodiversity and human consumers due to potential heavy metal accumulation. The findings underscore the urgent need for effective marine debris management, community education, and long-term monitoring.
