摘要

The SA 516 Gr 70 steel is an ideal candidate for pressure vessel fabrication which is used for storing gases in liquid form at very high pressure. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of S4-C504 (EN ISO 14341-A) and S4-I504 (EN ISO 636-A) carbon fillers on welding of SA516 Gr.70 HSLA steel. The microstructure, hardness and toughness of the specimens were examined in detail. The hardness was measured using Vickers microhardness in the WM (Weld metal), Parent metal (PM) and Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). Pearlite and polygonal ferrite were observed in SA516 base metal. Windmanstaten ferrite with elongated ferrite microsturure was observed when SA516 steel welded with S4-C504 filler wire. While Intergranular ferrite present in pearlite matrix and equiaxed microstructure were seen when SA516 steel welded with S4-I504 filler wire. S4-C504 filler gives higher peak hardness while S4-I504 filler offers improved hardness uniformity. Dense dimples with size of 27.283µm and facets formation observed in fusion zone when S4-C504 filler used while sharp and irregular surfaces with size of 57.316 µm & 26.156 µm were observed in HAZ region. Deep dense dimples in the fusion zone and HAZ region of about 32.789 µm & 29.236 µm size were observed when S4-I504 filler wire used.
