South–West Range Extension of Spotted Linsang Prionodon pardicolor in Garo Hills of Meghalaya, and Comprehensive Mapping for Its Conservation in India
摘要
The Spotted Linsang (Prionodon pardicolor) is a lesser-known species from Asia, with its sole presence in India among two species. Recent records from northeastern states highlight the limited sightings of this elusive, solitary, semi-arboreal small carnivore. Our finding remains unique as this is the first sighting in Meghalaya at Daribokgre Community Reserve that extends the known southwest distribution range of the species, emphasizing the role of Community Forests in conserving such elusive species. This record underscores and adds information to the species' preference for dense, and undisturbed habitats. The Spotted Linsang's semi-arboreal nature and solitary lifestyle remain inadequately studied. The ongoing threats of deforestation, hunting, and habitat fragmentation in northeastern India pose significant challenges to its conservation. The findings highlight the importance of community reserves in protecting such rare species and promoting conservation efforts.
