Influence of River Bridge on River Morphology: A Case study of Transboundary Ghaghara River
摘要
Bridges over rivers are crucial for connectivity but can significantly alter river morphology. Their construction often narrows channels and obstructs natural flow, leading to changes in flow paths and increased downstream erosion, especially during peak flows. This study examines two bridges over the Ghaghara River using width ratio (B/b) analysis and visual interpretation of Landsat imagery in ArcGIS. Findings show that both structures disrupted the river’s course, particularly downstream, increasing flood risks during monsoons. Such changes threaten nearby communities and infrastructure. The study emphasizes the importance of considering geomorphological impacts in bridge planning and construction. Early assessments and adaptive designs are essential to minimize negative effects and enhance the structural and environmental resilience of riverine infrastructure.
