Effects of Foliar Nutrient Application of Zinc, Manganese, and Magnesium on the Yield and Economic Outcomes of Large Cardamom in an Eastern Himalayan Acidic Inceptisols of India

The existing literature on the effects of “foliar nutrient application of zinc, manganese, and magnesium on the yield and economic outcomes of large cardamom” reveals a notable gap in understanding the specific mechanisms and long-term impacts of these micronutrients on crop performance and economic returns. With this in mind, 5 years (2015 and 2019) field experiment was carried out during 2015-16 to 2019-20 at ICRI, RRS, Spices Board Research Farm, Kabi, North Sikkim to assess the impact of foliar nutrient application of micronutrients on the performance of large cardamom crop. The study was arranged in a randomized block design (RBD) comprising three replications. Experiment comprising eight treatments viz., ZnSO4 chelated @ 0.5 g lit–1(T1); ZnSO4 chelated @ 1 g lit–1 (T2); MnSO4 chelated @ 0.5 g lit–1 (T3); MnSO4 chelated @ 1 g lit–1 (T4); MgSO4 chelated @ 0.5 g lit–1 (T5); MgSO4 chelated @ 1 g lit–1 (T6); ZnSO4 + MnSO4 + MgSO4 @ 0.5 g lit–1 (T7) and control (T8). The results showed that foliar application of ZnSO4 + MnSO4 + MgSO4 @ 0.5 g /lit recorded the significant maximum number of spike clump− 1 (13.1) as compared to the other treatments. The significant highest fresh weight of capsules per clump (768 g) and dry capsule yield (685 kg ha− 1) was noticed under foliar application of ZnSO4 + MnSO4 + MgSO4 @ 0.5 g /lit followed by MgSO4 chelated @ 0.5 g/lit. In terms of economic returns, foliar application of ZnSO4 + MnSO4 + MgSO4 @ 0.5 g /lit recorded the significant rise in gross returns by 17% and net returns by 28% which was statistically at par with MgSO4 chelated @ 0.5 g/lit and significantly higher than other treatments, respectively. The significant maximum B: C ratio (1.92) was noticed under foliar application of ZnSO4 + MnSO4 + MgSO4 @ 0.5 g /lit followed by MgSO4 chelated @ 0.5 g/lit as compared to the other treatments, respectively. Thus, the overall finding suggested that treatment ZnSO4 + MnSO4 + MgSO4 @ 0.5 g /lit is an economically sound and environmentally robust approach for enhancement of sustainable production of organically grown large cardamom in an eastern Himalayan acidic Inceptisols of India and other similar agro ecoregions.
