<p>Jute semilooper, <i>Anomis sabulifera</i>&#xa0;Guenee, 1852, is a major and monophagous pest of jute. Epizootics in the field population of&#xa0;<i>A. sabulifera</i> caused by <i>Anomis sabulifera</i>&#xa0;nucleopolyhedrosis virus (<i>Ansa</i>NPV CRIJAF 1) necessitated isolation, identification and characterization while the efficacy was assessed both under laboratory and field conditions. Electron microscopic studies revealed that typical baculovirus occlusion bodies of type nucleopolyhedrosis virus with spherical and oval in shape and size ranging from 2.11 to 2.63&#xa0;µm with an average size of 2.37&#xa0;µm. Bioassay studies showed the larval mortality at low concentration of <i>Ansa</i>NPV i.e. 3.75 × 10<sup>2</sup> POBs/ml. Sequence data generated from amplification of <i>Ansa</i>NPV CRIJAF 1 strain polyhedrin,&#xa0;<i>polh</i>&#xa0;gene was deposited in GenBank (Accession number: MT863564). Pooled mean of larval reduction in the field experiment revealed that&#xa0;<i>Ansa</i>NPV CRIJAF 1 caused 41.88%, 56.10% and 82.13% larval reductions, respectively at 2, 4 and 7&#xa0;days after spray. The present study revealed that foliar application of <i>Ansa</i>NPV CRIJAF 1 strain was very effective in causing mortality and can be used as an effective biopesticide in the integrated pest management of&#xa0;<i>A. sabulifera</i>.</p>
