Comparative Biochemical Analysis in Fruits of Piper sarmentosum Roxb. from Andaman Islands, India and Commercial Piper longum L.

Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal is one of the native areas of distribution for Piper species. Piper sarmentosum, a native species of these islands, could be a potential substitute for the commercially used P. longum and detailed investigations are warranted. In the present study, phenolic acid profiling and piperine content were determined in the dehydrated fruits of both the species. Results revealed higher contents of piperine in the samples of P. sarmentosum, while the phenolic acids were found to be higher in fruits of P. longum. Phenolic acid profiling revealed t- Cinnamic acid, Protocatechuic acid, Gallic acid, Ferulic acid, Caffeic acid etc. as the major phenolic acids, though with varied concentrations. Considering the natural distribution of P. sarmentosum in the Andaman Islands, the species could be used as a source of antioxidants for island masses and existing variability could help in identifying superior germplasm suitable for commercial scale utilization.
