Silent Sentinels: Exceptional Metal Uptake by Two Green Algae from a Highly Contaminated River Stretch

This study evaluates heavy metal bioaccumulation potential of two green filamentous algae species, Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. and Rhizoclonium sp., found in Ganga river. Elevated concentrations of Pb (0.60 ± 0.17 mg/L), Cu (0.42 ± 0.05 mg/L), and Cr (0.78 ± 0.13 mg/L) were detected in the river. Both species showed significant metal uptake, Pb (1.79 ± 0.09 mg/g, and 3.05 ± 0.37 mg/g), Cu (0.77 ± 0.04 mg/g and 0.72 ± 0.04 mg/g), and Cr (5.49 ± 0.43 mg/g and 0.70 ± 0.05 mg/g), respectively. Bioaccumulation factor analysis revealed very high accumulation of Cr in Cladophora and Pb in Rhizoclonium. Significant correlations between Cr in river and Cladophora (r = 0.93, p < 0.05) and between Pb in river and Rhizoclonium (r = 0.89, p < 0.05) underscore their responsiveness to ambient contamination. The findings highlight the species-specific potential of these algae as effective agents of biomonitoring and bioremediation for Cr and Pb, which can contribute to improved environmental monitoring and pollution management in the Ganga River.
