Enhancing Phosphorus Use Efficiency and Yield Under Sustainable P Management in a Pigeonpea-Wheat System

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is widespread across India. As a sustainable alternative, balanced and integrated application of fertiliser-P with organic P sources offers a viable strategy to enhance P availability and achieve targeted yields. With this hypothesis, a field experiment was conducted under a pigeonpea–wheat system to evaluate integrated P management (IPsM) treatments involving diverse organic amendments: farmyard manure, poultry manure, crop residues in combination with 60% recommended rate of fertilizer-P. Results showed that poultry manure at 1 t ha− 1 in combination with 60% fertilizer-P increased system productivity by 5% over sole chemical fertilizer, primarily due to improved P availability and microbial activity. IPsM resulted in significant surge in soluble-P (28–44%), being higher under poultry manure and wheat residue with PSB treatments. A significant positive correlation between pigeonpea yield and labile-P established the soil-plant P relationship. These findings suggest that applying of poultry manure (1 t ha− 1) with 60% recommended fertilizer-P can sustain productivity vis-à-vis P-availability.
