<p>A roving survey was conducted to study the incidence and percent damage of maize by leaf folder during the <i>Kharif</i> season 2024 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Out of the 600 plants randomly observed from three fields, the average percent incidence was in the range of 9.5–12 percent. Mostly younger maize plants were infested by the leaf folder, and the most common damage symptoms were rolled apical leaves and dried-up appearances. To confirm the identity of the pest, morpho-molecular techniques were used. It revealed the pest identity as <i>Marasmia trapezalis</i> also called maize webworm. Further, phylogenetic analysis corroborated our identity of the species. The COI gene sequences of <i>M. trapezalis</i> were submitted to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information for the first time from India. It’s also the first report of the leaf folder pest infestation on maize from Uttar Pradesh, India. The damage symptoms, adult photographs, female genitalia, and DNA barcodes facilitate the quick identification of the pest and subsequent decision on the management practices.</p>
