Standardization of Propagation Techniques and Restoration of Litsea deccanensis Gamble- A Jiggat Yielding Plant for Sustainable Utilization

Litsea deccanensis Gamble, a significant tree species from the Lauraceae family, plays a crucial role in the incense stick (agarbatti) industry due to its bark’s excellent binding properties. However, its population has been declining due to over-harvesting and vulnerability to pests. This study investigates effective propagation and conservation strategies for L. deccanensis. The seeds were determined to be recalcitrant, with a critical moisture content of 13–15%. Freshly harvested seeds exhibited a 48% germination rate with a moisture content of 33%. Scarified seeds soaked in GA3 at 500 ppm for 24 h showed an improved germination rate of up to 80%. Seed viability was maintained for up to 10 months, with a 20% germination rate at 16% moisture content. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) at 5000 ppm was the most effective among the stem-cutting treatments, resulting in 100% rooting, the greatest number of roots, and the longest root length. In air layering experiments, treatments with Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), especially at concentrations of 1000 ppm and 3000 ppm, were the most effective in stimulating root development, resulting in 100% rooting and the highest average number of roots per layer. The study further details successful seedling planting in various highland locations in Kerala, contributing to the ex-situ conservation of L. deccanensis. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing propagation techniques and supporting the sustainable cultivation of L. deccanensis to meet conservation and commercial needs.
