Rinds of Punica granatum Fruit: The Hidden Treasure of Phytochemicals with Antibacterial, Antioxidant and Anticancer Properties

Pomegranate rind extracts (Punica granatum var. pleniflora) have been historically utilized for their therapeutic properties, and this study investigates their phytochemical composition, antibacterial, antioxidant, FTIR and cytotoxic activities. The research emphasizes the impact of various extraction solvents on the yield and profile of bioactive compounds, notably total phenols, flavonoids, and tannins, with ethanol proving to be the most effective solvent. The presence of diverse phytochemicals, while antioxidant activities assessed through DPPH methods demonstrated significant free radical scavenging capabilities. The antibacterial efficacy was evaluated against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, revealing varying resistance levels. Qualitative analyses confirmed a diverse phytochemical profile, while Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to identify functional groups within the rind extracts, supporting the presence of key bioactive compounds. The functional groups were examined in the extracts of ethanol and methanol of pomegranate rind and the cytotoxicity were evaluated using the MTT assay on various cancer cell lines, indicating a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability. The potential of pomegranate rind extracts as a source of natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents, and also with its efficient cytotoxic effect warranting further exploration of their health benefits and applications in food and medicine.
