Differential Feeding and Settling Behavior of Zaprionus indianus to Naturally-Associated Yeasts, Debaromyces hansenii and Pichia kudriazevii

In this study, we explore the Drosophila-yeast relationship using naturally isolated yeasts, Debaromyces hansenii Lodder & Kreger-van Rij (1984) and Pichia kudriazevii Boidin, Pignal & Besson (1965) from Zaprionus indianus Gupta (1970), a secondary pest. Larval feeding preference and adult settling behavior of Z. indianus were evaluated under laboratory conditions through two-choice and multi-choice assays where Pichia kudriavzevii (strain zibd3) and Debaromyces hansenii (strain ziha1) were colored either blue/green or colorless. Notably, Zaprionus indianus exhibited significant attraction towards Debaromyces hanseni over Pichia kudriazevii in terms of larval feeding preference and adult settling behaviour. Hence, Zaprionus indianus showed specialist behaviour against both the yeast species; however, green color preference was observed in the adults. The results showed the differences among yeast species to attract Drosophila and therefore, future research could utilize other yeasts, especially those that are naturally associated with Drosophila, to develop potential bio-control agent against the pest species of Drosophila.
