<p>In underdeveloped nations, improper solid waste management (SWM) practices continue to pose significant threats to public health, the environment, and sustainable development. This study investigates the impact of poor SWM on the Chiana community in the Upper East region of Ghana, focusing on human health, disease outbreaks, livestock well-being, and environmental degradation. Through an observational cross-sectional survey employing qualitative research methods, key informants were interviewed to gather insights into current waste management practices and their consequences. Findings reveal that Chiana’s inadequate waste management systems have led to numerous detrimental effects, including the proliferation of disease vectors, increased incidences of infectious diseases, risks to livestock health from grazing in contaminated areas, and environmental pollution from open dumping and burning of waste. To address these challenges, sustainable and practicable waste management approaches are proposed. Community-based recycling initiatives, composting programs, and waste-to-energy solutions are recommended to improve waste management efficiency while aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and climate action (SDG 13). Collaboration among stakeholders, including community members, local government authorities, NGOs, and private sector entities, is essential for the successful implementation of these approaches. This study throws more light on the urgent need for coordinated efforts to enhance waste management practices in the community, promoting public health, environmental sustainability, and progress towards achieving the SDGs. The study’s novelty lies in its localized, qualitative exploration of the specific impacts and sustainable solutions for improper solid waste management in Chiana, Ghana, providing a unique and replicable model for similar communities.</p>
