Optimal Design of Earthen Dam Using GeoStudio: A Case Study of Hanota Dam
摘要
This study optimizes the upstream slope of the Hanota Dam on the Bina River to reduce material usage while ensuring safety compliance. Utilizing GeoStudio’s SLOPE/W and SEEP/W modules, the upstream slope is adjusted from 3.6H:1 V to an optimized 2.5H:1 V above the berm level. Detailed simulations under critical conditions reveal a 12.98% reduction in dam volume and a 55,110 m2 reduction in ground area. The optimal configuration maintains the required Factor of Safety for all conditions specified by IS:7894–1975. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of computational tools in optimizing earthen dam designs, achieving material savings while meeting safety requirements.
