Safety Evaluation of Caeselpinia bonducella, a Medicinal Plant of Assam, India
摘要
Caesalpinia bonducella (Caesalpiniaceae) is a proven traditionally used anthelmintic medicinal plant of India. It is used by the Mishing tribe in North-east India. Although a widely used effective anthelmintic remedy, its toxic potentials has not been explored. This study assesses its toxic potentials in rodent models following OECD guidelines. This study did not show any deviations in food and water consumption of the animals and the body weights and relative organ weights were found to be normal. However, reductions in WBC and platelet counts were seen along with an elevation in the lymphocyte percentage. Transmission electron microscopy study revealed alterations in the liver nucleus where the nucleolus was found to be deformed and reduced in size. The kidney tissue showed normal architecture. The results indicate that the plant can cause toxic effects in its long-term usage and should be used only for a short treatment period.
