<p>India’s increasing fish production is paralleled by significant post-harvest losses, which highlights the need for effective preservation, such as fish icing. However, research on the feasibility of ice production is limited. To address this gap, a study in Tamil Nadu, in which 53 ice plants were assessed, revealed that ice production was profitable, with benefit-cost ratios ranging from 1.43 to 1.8. Despite the annual ice requirement of a national demand of 8.61&#xa0;million tonnes (MT) versus 1.54 MT in Tamil Nadu, a 0.25 MT shortfall correlates with future increases in fish production (<i>r</i> = 0.94*), highlighting the critical need for an adequate ice supply to support the fisheries sector. The key constraints include high investment (0.81), registration challenges (0.78), and noise pollution (0.67), emphasizing the need for government support to increase the ice supply and reduce post-harvest losses.</p>
