Lygaeid Bug Nysius cymoides, (Spinola, 1837) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae), Incidence on Aromatic Herb Chamomile: A New Report from New Delhi, India

This study reports the presence of Nysius cymoides, a species of lygaeid insect, infesting chamomile crops in New Delhi, India, for the first time. The insect’s identification relied on morphological criteria and was subsequently confirmed through molecular techniques. Although direct economic damage to chamomile crops has not been observed, this insect may become a pest in the future. The infestation period was recorded from November (2022) to February (2023), and characteristic symptoms included the appearance of brown patches, plant desiccation, and petal and flower loss. This study emphasizes the need for further investigation to assess the extent of damage caused by N. cymoides and suggests that the insect’s adaptability to new environments, polyphagous nature, and potential alteration of cropping patterns could contribute to its infestation. This report offers initial insights into the presence of the insect and its impact on chamomile crops in New Delhi, underscoring the importance of monitoring and the development of pest management strategies to safeguard chamomile cultivation in northern India.
