Effect of dietary Apricot Kernel Extract (AKE) on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, biochemical profile, intestinal histomorphometry and Aeromonas hydrophila resistance in common carp

This research paper investigates the effects of apricot kernel extract (AKE) on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, biochemical profile, intestinal histomorphometry, and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila in common carp. The study aimed to explore AKE as a natural dietary supplement and its impact on overall health and disease resistance. A total of 180 juvenile common carp with an average initial weight of 16.91 ± 0.3 g were randomly divided into four treatment groups: a control group (To) without AKE and four experimental groups supplemented with 0.25% (T1), 0.5% (T2), 0.75% (T3), and 1.0% (T4) AKE in the diet, respectively. After a 60-day feeding trial, the inclusion of AKE significantly influenced the growth performance of common carp. The group supplemented with 1% AKE exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) highest weight gain, specific growth rate, and survival rate, along with improved feed conversion ratio compared to the control group. AKE supplementation positively impacted the health status of common carp, as indicated by improved (p < 0.05) serum biochemical parameters. Digestive enzyme activity and intestinal villi morphometry were enhanced (p < 0.05) with AKE supplementation. Moreover, AKE inclusion increased the survivability of fish when challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Overall, this study demonstrates the beneficial effects of AKE as a feed additive on the growth performance and health of common carp, highlighting its potential as a natural alternative in aquaculture practices.
