<p>The expansion of electricity generation from renewable energies led to an increased need for storage capacity in the interconnected grid. This raised the importance of pumped storage as the only option for large-scale electricity storage for the time being. As a result, numerous projects for new pumped storage facilities or the expansion of existing plants were reactivated or newly developed over the last two decades in Germany. However, the current energy industry situation also led to a number of these projects being scaled back or even cancelled.</p>
