<p>Standardised procedures are essential to establish video monitoring at fish ladders as a reliable method. Clearly defined documentation standards, from site parameters to system technology and biological data collection, can significantly improve the comparability and significance of monitoring data. In addition to methodological recommendations, the suitability of this data for the common evaluation systems is discussed. The article provides a practical basis for systematically ensuring the quality and reproducibility of video-based surveys.</p>
