<p>Injuries and deaths cannot be ruled out when fish pass through the turbines of hydropower plants. However, in terms of population, mortality rates at larger Kaplan turbines are in the low single-digit percentage range for most species and life stages. Therefore, measurable effects on potamodromous fish populations are probably the exception and have not yet been documented. Habitat measures are a promising way of reducing contact with turbines and offsetting the remaining mortality.</p>
