<p>The State Reservoir Administration of Saxony operates a total of 87 dams, including 25 drinking water dams. The dams have grown historically and were built for different purposes. Dams are usually managed based on the available water supply and existing demand. Reservoir management needs to be regularly reviewed and, if necessary, adjusted. One of the major challenges for the future of Saxony's water management is climate change, the effects of which are already being felt today. In order to counteract these as quickly and effectively as possible, the State Reservoir Administration is pursuing a strategy of implementing various climate adaptation measures. The main measures range from making water management more flexible to making structural adjustments to existing facilities or transferring water from other catchment areas. Improving the connectivity or expanding dams, and, if necessary, the constructing new dams, play an important role in the strategy. As a result of extreme floods in Saxony, a large number of measures have already been implemented in recent years. In addition to adapting to extreme floods, the current focus is also on adapting management to prolonged and extreme droughts.</p>
