<p>In Saxony, the flood information and alert service has a long-standing tradition, shaped by the state's location and economic development, particularly along its major rivers. After large-scale regional flood disasters, the system has been repeatedly improved to ensure timely flood warnings for the public. The development of the flood information service, first documented in 1784, illustrates these continuous advancements. Following the devastating floods of 2002, 2010, and 2013, the flood information and alert service was extensively modernized and optimized. This was followed by a decade of persistent drought, which was only interrupted by the major regional flood at Christmas 2023. The subsequent flood in September 2024 had only a marginal impact on Saxony, in contrast to Poland, the Czech Republic, and Austria. Nevertheless, this flood served as a practical test for all participants in the flood information and alert service, demonstrating that Saxony is well-prepared for disasters similar to those experienced in neighbouring countries.</p>
