<p>The seepage water from mansonry gravity dams often has a higher proportion of sodium, magnesium and calcium than the water in the reservoir. An extensive program was carried out at the approximately 100-year-old Lehnmühle dam to investigate whether this elution affected the stability of the dam. The examination of the mechanical and mineralogical properties of the concrete showed that the load-bearing concrete matrix is not affected. Supplementary time-lapse experiments indicated that there are no concerns about a global reduction in the strength of the dam body over a long period of time. The results of the tests allowed considerable savings to be made in the retrofitting work compared to the original preliminary planning.</p>
