This publication explores the historical development of the shaft power plant concept and its application at the Dietenheim site. It also shares the experiences gained during the implementation and operation at this site, which serve as the basis for identifying technical and economic optimization potential from the perspective of planning engineers and thus applying innovative planning approaches. This potential is currently being integrated into the design of new projects aimed at implementing the shaft power plant concept at different scales. In conclusion, there is still significant potential for implementing this concept, especially when connected with non-powered dams, if the focus is on economic and ecological sustainability from the very beginning of project development.
