In the Integrated Rhine Program (IRP) of the state of Baden-Württemberg, retention flooding for flood protection and ecological flooding for floodplain renaturation are carried out in the retention areas (RHR). Ecological flooding, which itself leads to killing, is intended to prevent killing in the event of retention. The ban on killing is already violated if the risk of killing particulary protected species increases significantly as a result of flooding. A procedure has been developed that makes it possible to estimate the risk of killing with and without ecological flooding.
