In addition to the increase in the frequency of extreme events, extreme events themselves are also taking on new previously rarely observed dimensions (extreme flooding in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatine in 2021 and the actually “classic” Christmas flood in 2023 in almost all of Germany (there were so many of them in 1993 or 1947, for example) - extreme low water levels in the Rhine in 2018 and 2022 (this also happened before 2003 or 1921, for example). As a consequence of climate change, these measures require responsible water management. Significantly better purification of water is required and retention of water is the order of the day - ideally as a combination pool for artificial infiltration. The Bedouins in the Jordanian desert have been doing this for over 6 000 years.
