100 Jahre Isarwerk 2

The plans for the erection of Isarwerk 2 go back to the Isar regulation project between the Großhesseloher railroad bridge and the Thalkirchen falls (Flaucher) approved in July 1904. However, with the construction of the 7 MW Uppenborn plant near Moosburg, the construction of Isarwerk 2 no longer appeared to be a priority for the city of Munich, as an estimate of the electricity demand suggested that it would not be economically viable until 1915. After the First World War, projects ready for construction were sought to alleviate unemployment. These projects included the plans for Isarwerk 2, which was intended to be built in these difficult times. Throughout the construction period, inflation had an increasing impact on construction costs. As early as 1921, the different price increases for coal compared to the construction costs for hydroelectric power plants were monitored, which increasingly favoured the expansion of hydroelectric power. Thanks to the courage of the pioneers to implement this ambitious project in this difficult economic phase, the people of Munich now owe 100 years of green electricity from this power plant, that has been completely overhauled in 2010. To celebrate the occasion, Stadtwerke München organized an open day on 21 October 2023, at which almost 3 000 interested citizens came to find out about the sustainable generation of 15 million kWh per year at this site.
