Background <p>The term <i>advanced practice nurse</i> (APN) is not a&#xa0;legally protected nursing role designation in Germany. Consequently, some nurses refer to themselves as APN or nursing experts despite the absence of formal criteria.</p> Objectives <p>To examine the characteristic profile of self-described APN and assessment of the extent to which they meet the formal criteria and practice components of an APN.</p> Methods <p>A&#xa0;secondary analysis of the AkaPP dataset was conducted within the subgroup of nurses who self-identified as APN or nursing experts (<i>n</i> = 27). The analysis applied descriptive statistical methods to determine the extent to which each individual met the formal APN criteria and APN practice components.</p> Results <p>Of the nurses two fulfilled both the formal APN criteria and the APN practice components and could therefore be classified as psychiatric APN but two bachelor’s degree qualified nurses met the APN practice components but did not fulfil the formal APN criteria. The results confirm the hypothesis that only a&#xa0;few self-designated APN actually meet the required criteria of an APN.</p> Conclusion <p>A&#xa0;systematic clarification of academic nursing roles in the form of a&#xa0;scientifically grounded role model for psychiatric nursing is essential. Clearly defining role boundaries between different areas of competence and integrating international insights should be key considerations.</p>

Background

The term advanced practice nurse (APN) is not a legally protected nursing role designation in Germany. Consequently, some nurses refer to themselves as APN or nursing experts despite the absence of formal criteria.

Objectives

To examine the characteristic profile of self-described APN and assessment of the extent to which they meet the formal criteria and practice components of an APN.

Methods

A secondary analysis of the AkaPP dataset was conducted within the subgroup of nurses who self-identified as APN or nursing experts (n = 27). The analysis applied descriptive statistical methods to determine the extent to which each individual met the formal APN criteria and APN practice components.

Results

Of the nurses two fulfilled both the formal APN criteria and the APN practice components and could therefore be classified as psychiatric APN but two bachelor’s degree qualified nurses met the APN practice components but did not fulfil the formal APN criteria. The results confirm the hypothesis that only a few self-designated APN actually meet the required criteria of an APN.

Conclusion

A systematic clarification of academic nursing roles in the form of a scientifically grounded role model for psychiatric nursing is essential. Clearly defining role boundaries between different areas of competence and integrating international insights should be key considerations.
