Das „Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile“: Übersetzung ins Deutsche, kulturelle Adaption und Pretest

Due to the demographic aging and the complex physical, psychological, and social needs of older people, the acute care hospital holds a key position in their healthcare. Without age-appropriate care, prolonged hospitalization can impair the independent performance of activities of daily living of those patients.

The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile into the German language to estimate age-appropriate care in German language hospitals.

The Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile, which assesses the age-appropriate care of older patients in acute care hospitals at the institutional and personnel level, was subjected to quantitative and qualitative testing after translation into German.

The testing of the content validity resulted in a mean value of 0.86 for relevance and 0.92 for translation on the Scale Content Validity Index—Average. The translated Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile required further linguistic adaptations following cognitive debriefing. Additionally, the instrument’s theoretical foundation was found to have shortcomings.

Age-appropriate hospitalization is a current topic with high relevance for those affected and healthcare providers. A theoretically sound questionnaire and a structured approach are needed to contribute to practice development through confirmed knowledge gain.
