摘要

Background

This paper presents the implementation and results of an evidence-based practice (EBP) project dealing with the effectiveness of early simulation training on clinical anesthesia performance of postgraduate students.

Problem

During the first clinical rotation of the nurse anesthesia program, a high level of anesthesia competence is already expected from students in clinical practice. The training course led to the PICO-oriented research question: do continuing education students who receive simulation training prior to their clinical rotation demonstrate better clinical performance in anesthesia compared to continuing education students who do not receive simulation training?

Method of review

To present the rationale and answer the PICO question, a systematic literature review was conducted in Cochrane, Medline, CINAHL, and the J. B. Institute EBP database. The review results showed evidence that simulation training is effective in training clinical performance and that skills learned via simulation training can be transferred to clinical practice.

Method of the project

Based on the evidence extracted in the review, a practice development project was conducted within the program. The EBP project was planned and implemented using Iowa model methodology. An anesthesia simulation training was conducted and evaluated with a group of anesthesia nursing students by pre- and post-training surveys.

Results of the project

The survey results demonstrate the positive efficacy of simulation training on the perceived anesthesia performance of nurse anesthesia students.

Discussion and conclusion

Evidence from the review on positive effects of simulation training on clinical performance of anesthesia trainees could be confirmed within the implementation project. Limitations were the small number of participants and the limited comparability of the training content. The results of the survey demonstrated that early simulation training improves clinical performance and confidence of nurses during their first clinical rotation. It is recommended that anesthesia simulation training be provided prior to clinical anesthesia assignments.
