<p>This research aims to synthesize a photocatalyst which is Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from the residue of rosemary essential oils (EO) extraction using a green method, and its application to degrade organic dyes (Safranin and Reactive Red 180) and real textile wastewater (RTW) using UV light. Characterizations using TGA, XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM–EDX and UV–Visible analysis were performed to ensure the production of ZnO NPs. In order to enhance the photocatalytic process, the amount of photocatalyst, starting concentration and pH of dyes were studied. The various tests carried out clearly indicate the effectiveness of the synthesized semiconductor, elimination efficiency of 100% was obtained for 10&#xa0;mg/L of safranin, pH equal to 8 and 1&#xa0;g/L of ZnO. The ideal parameters for completely getting rid of Reactive Red 180 (RR 180) were a concentration of 10&#xa0;mg/L, dose of 1&#xa0;g/L and pH 7, under UVA for both of the dyes. The photocatalyst demonstrated an 89.78% removal efficiency for decolorizing real textile wastewater under optimum conditions (pH 8 and dose of 4&#xa0;g/L). According to the Turkish Water Pollution Control Regulation, the wastewater’s color parameter falls to 50 Pt–Co.</p>
