Biomaterials for manufacturing environmentally sustainable textiles and apparel: sources, applications, challenges, enablers and future directions

The growing environmental concerns associated with conventional textile manufacturing processes have intensified the search for eco-friendly biomaterials as sustainable alternatives. The environmental significance, characteristics, and applications of biomaterials in the manufacturing of sustainable textiles and apparel are analyzed in this review. It looks at bio-based polymers, natural fibers, and advanced bio-fabrication techniques that reduce pollution and consumption of resources. It highlights developments in eco-friendly, renewable, and biodegradable alternatives, encouraging a transition towards more environmentally sustainable textiles and apparel. The importance of these biomaterials extends beyond production and consumption. These biomaterials enhance product durability, quality, performance, and promote waste minimization strategies. However, challenges such as scalability, cost, and consumer awareness necessitate collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including manufacturers, consumers, and policymakers, to overcome these challenges. Enablers and research directions for integrating biomaterials into the textile and apparel industry include advancements in material science, increased investment in sustainable practices, and the establishment of regulatory frameworks that incentivize sustainable production and production. It also enhances the vital role of eco-friendly biomaterials in transitioning towards a sustainable textile industry, ultimately aligning with broader environmental goals and contributing to the global shift towards a circular economy.
